In Search of God's Promises

What is the one thing we do when we feel out of control in a situation? We grasp onto something stable, something we can lean on, something that will hold us up. When the ground is shifting we want something solid to stand on. This is a journey through the Bible in search of God's promises for us today. Let's look together to see how many "boulders" He has in His quarry for us to stand on! "It is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants." Rom. 9:8

Promise 66 from Deuteronomy:19:17

Deut. 19:17 - "'Then both the men who have the dispute shall stand before the Lord, before priests and the judges who will be in office in those days.'"

As I was thinking  how backwards our judicial system has become, putting the judges first and separating state from "religion", a friend came up and reminded me that the Supreme Court still begins with prayer. I wonder, do the lower courts begin with prayer too? I could be cynical and ask, "Where is the fruit of those prayers then? Why has our country fallen into such immoral allowances? "But I won't! If I compare our nation with others who are lead by such corrupt governments and where the people have absolutely no power whatsoever, I can see where God has protected us in many ways. Our country is very blessed. The ratio of economically poor and destitute is minimal in our country compared to the many others of this world. We do not need to live in fear daily of suicide bombers at the hands of our government, we don't need to negotiate prices for food, or pay off corrupt police men. We don't have men with rifles breaking into our homes threatening us on regular basis, our daughters are not being raped by rebels. Foreigners in our country are not being kidnapped for ransom and Christians, nor any other person of any faith is being imprisoned just because of their faith. God has blessed us, He is the Great judge, as long as we continue to put Him first, we will continue to see His blessings.

Promise 65 from Deuteronomy: 19:8-10

Deut. 19:8-10 - "'If the Lord your God enlarges your territory, just as He has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which He promised to give your fathers - if you carefully observe all this commandment which I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in His was always - then you shall add three more cities for yourself, besides these three. So innocent blood will not be shed in the midst of your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance, and blood guiltiness be on you.'"

God expands territory and He provides places of refuge. Again, Moses emphasises the conditions for God to keep His promise to the Israelites: "to carefully observe the commandments, to love the Lord their God and to walk in His ways always." If they do that, He will expand their territory, which will enable them to provide more cities of refuge for those who have accidentally killed others. This is the same as the concept of "If you do well with little, you shall be rewarded with much more." Obedience in times of small gain will reap a reward of greater gain. If we are faithful, obedient and follow after God with the small portion that God has given us, then He will bless us with the more, not because we earned it, but because He sees us worthy of deserving it. When our land or portion is expanded, then that enables us to reach out to more people and to provide assistance to more who are in need. When we are faithful, then through our blessing, others are equally blessed.

Promise 64 from Deuteronomy: 18:18-20

Deut. 18:18-20 - "'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. It shall come about that whoever will not listen to my words, which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him. But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.'"

Prophets need to be anointed by God, to be chosen by Him and blessed by Him if they are going to be carriers of His words, and to be His voice. God said, He will put His words in them and will require it of the prophet to speak His words out. If he likes it or not, Prophets have a huge responsibility, they need to be sure that the voice they hear is God's, so that they can speak His words out accurately. How do they know that it is God's voice they are hearing? Well, God's sheep know His voice. When prophets spend significant time in His presence, they get to know their Father's (Shepherd's) voice very well. If prophets speak on their own accord however, but say it is from God, they are wilfully disobediant and the punishment is death. The prophet is safe though when He remains in His Father's presence and is always plugged into the lifeline of the Father, then His job is easy. He just repeats what he hears the Father saying. God speaks through His chosen prophets, this is a great promise!

Promise 63 from Deuteronomy: 18:15

Deut. 18:15 - "'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your  countrymen (brothers), you shall listen to him.'"

There are many denominations whose theological beliefs say that there are no prophets today. Prophets, in the old testament were the carriers of the message and truth of God. They brought encouragement and warning and revealed things that only God could see. I struggle with that belief; that there are no prophets today, because there are many who God has given prophetic gifts to. These are people who bring Biblical encouragement. They speak out Kingdom truth as it relates to a situation (again, Biblically based) and they can speak out things about yourself that only that person and God would know, because God told them. We need prophets today. Often times we get so wrapped up into a situation that we don't take time or are too stressed to quiet our hearts, so as to hear God's voice speaking into the situation. Sometimes have never stepped into Kingdom presence here on earth, so then we miss seeing things we ought to see and hearing things we ought to hear and believing things we ought to believe (because we are believing other voices instead). God sends us kinsmen, friends and members of the spiritual family, who are living in Kingdom presence, to reveal to us God's heart, eyes and voice into the situations of our lives. I know I've been encouraged by many of those people. God will reveal to you and even send you prophets who are near you. Ask Him today, you never know, He just might put those prophetic gifts inside you so that you can be an encouragement to others.

Promise 62 from Deuteronomy: 18:12-13

Deut. 18:12-13 - "'For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord; and because of these detestable things, the Lord your God will drive them out before you. You shall be blameless (or have integrity) before the Lord you God.'"

The Lord is very clear about his thoughts toward any type of sorcery or witchcraft. It is "detestable" to Him. Because of this, He wont even allow His people to be bothered by them. He will just remove them or their power from touching His people, nor even be tempted by it. The Lord, Himself goes to bat for the integrity of His people so that they are not defiled by such devilish acts. This is an area we don't have to worry about. He has our backs on this one. We just need to be just as disgusted by it as He is.

Promise 61 from Deuteronomy: 18:2

Deut. 18:2 - "'They (the Levitical priests) shall have no inheritance among their countrymen; the Lord is their inheritance, as He promised them.'"

As a single missionary with no children, I think often about what I could possible leave as a legacy and to whom? I have no estate and no offspring to leave it to, if I had one. I don't have much to leave behind, but I do have a grand inheritance to receive. I'm not talking about the furniture I'll receive from my dad's estate, but a whole kingdom of riches from my Heavenly Father's estate. The Lord, Himself is my inheritance! If I receive my inheritance today (which I have), then I will indeed not only have something grand to leave behind, but even more, to take with me and accumulate after I leave. There is nothing more valuable and more precious than having all the riches of the Heavenly Kingdom as a possession, and nothing more honourable than to pass that inheritance on to others. I am willing to give my inheritance to any and all, but what I don't know is; how many are willing to receive it? The Lord is my inheritance, that is my promise from Him!

Promise 60 from Deuteronomy: 17:18-19

Deut. 17:18-19 - "'Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes.'"

What does an "ideal" king, or country leader look like? Moses describes that king: vs. 15 - he should be a king that God chooses, he needs to be a countryman (not a foreigner); vs. 16 - he should not multiply horses for himself; vs 17- he shall not multiply wives for himself, he shall not increase sliver or gold for himself; vs. 18 - he shall write for himself a copy of the law on a scroll in the presence of Levitical priests; vs. 19 - he shall read it daily. Why should he do this? "So that he may learn to fear the Lord his God." and verse 20 continues by saying, "That his heart may not be lifted up above his countryman and that he not turn aside from the commandment." And in this "he and his sons will continue long in the kingdom." We have the practical guidelines given here. In each instruction it draws the king's attention from raising him self above anyone and totally keeping his attention on God and the law. In doing this he maintains a fear or reverence for God. The blessing in promise is long life and favour among God and the people. Jesus set such a great example of this as He came so humbly as a babe and walked with no regard for earthly gain, yet in the end, he gained the world, should they yield themselves to Him. As those adopted into the kingdom of God, we have a mandate as royals, as leaders, to put on the Christ-like mantle of leadership, to humble ourselves so that our focus remains on Him and so that we do not put ourselves above others. We too then, will live long in the kingdom.

Promise 59 from Deuteronomy: 16:20

Deut. 16:20 - "'Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, that you may live and possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you.'"

There is a pattern seen here; "That you may live and possess the land." We are seeing that there are rules and regulations that must be adhered to in order for the Israelites to experience the blessing of "full living" and "peaceful possession" of the land. In this verse, they must live justly in the land. They are not to "distort justice or take bribes or be partial," according to verse 19. In other words, they shall not be corrupt or allow anyone to corrupt them. When they stand firm on what is right in the eyes of the Lord, if they treat all as equals and defend the defenceless, God will bless them in that land. If you think about what the heart goes through when one is trying to cheat another, to get revenge, or to cause another to fail, you see a heart that is motivated out of self-ambition, jealousy, anger, envy, and the eyes are totally focused on "self". That is what God is trying to warn his people against. He doesn't want them to become selfish and so self-absorbed on what they can get and how they can better themselves that they forget who He is. I believe there are many societies in  this world who have forgotten who God is. Politicians rule out of fear and selfish gain, if not for themselves, for their own political party. They have forgotten what it means to look up and to see who God is, therefore, they are not experiencing the promised blessing of the fullness of life and peaceful possession of their land. "Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is right (just), whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think (dwell) on these things. (Phil. 4:8)" Are we doing this? As a nation, I think not. Look at the blessing we miss out corporately. But I do believe, individually we must strive for "just" living, and when we do, He blesses us.

Promise 58 from Deuteronomy: 16:15

Deut. 16:15 - "'Seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful.'"

The Lord delights to se His people joyful! The Israelites were told to plan a big party into their schedules because God was going to bless them. Instead of setting out to do their work in hopes of success, they already knew they were going to be successful, their crops would be plentiful and their herds will be large enough to have plenty to sacrifice, yet provide for their families. What if we too approached our work with expectations of success and not failure? What if we automatically planned in celebrations of success  even before we laid a hand on the plough, in anticipation of God's blessings? God desires to bless us so that we will be joyful. Let's schedule in a joyous celebration in anticipation of God's blessing. He already promised that of His people, why not grasp ahold of it now?

Promise 57 from Deuteronomy: 15:18

Deut. 15:18 - "'It shall not seem hard to you when you set him free, for he has given you six years with double the service of a hired man; so the Lord your God will bless you in whatever you do.'"

Some times we fall into a trap of thinking that God only has one way or answer for us for each decision that needs to be made. In this passage Moses is teaching the law on the sabbatical year. "If you purchase a kinsman as a slave, then on the 7th year, you set him/or her free. But if you all get along nicely and the slave doesn't want to leave then you have the choice to take him or her into your household to serve you forever, "You can keep them or let them go, the Lord will bless you in whatever you decide." Because the Lord knows us, if we are trustworthy, He will trust us and bless us with whatever decisions we make in life. Often times He throws many options out there and says, "Here, help yourself!" God is not a Dictator God, He is loving and compassionate and trusts those who love and honour Him. He will bless the choices we make, we can't go wrong.

Promise 56 from Deuteronomy: 15:10

Deut. 15:10 - "'You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing, the Lord your god will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings.'"

This verse is speaking about giving to a brother in need. The thing that sticks out to me in this verse is that it doesn't address the motivation or condition of the heart of the one in need, but of the heart of the one who is to give. There are many fine books out there that caution people to not be enablers for the poor, in other words, don't give so much so as to cause a dependent lifestyle on others. I know I question the motivation of those who beg: Are they lying to me? Are they just wanting drugs or alcohol? Have they chosen begging as their career? I don't want to give to one who lies to me about what they want the money for, or if a family member has a gambling addiction or has made poor choices in overspending. Out of distrust, or fear, we don't want to give to that brother or sister in need. But God doesn't put conditions on our giving, He says, 'give to him generously and don't be grieved in your heart.' The Lord delights in this, He promises to bless us in all we do as a result. We need to leave the motivation and condition of the heart to God and be responsible for our own.

Promise 55 from Deuteronomy: 15:6

Deut. 15:6 - "'For the Lord your God will bless you as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you.'"

I think of the trillions of dollars of debt our country has because of the poor choices that our country's leaders have made and it saddens me. At one time, it was evident to see God's blessings over our country, but those were times when our leaders actually feared God and looked to Him for wisdom. Of course there are still God's blessings that flow throughout our land, but I just wonder how long He will tolerate the continued decisions that are made with no regard for Him. In order to get out of debt as a nation, we will have to depend on others, such as Japan or China. Maybe a  good dose of humility is just what our nation needs. But to what cost? It just seems it would be so much easier to turn to God once again. He will bless us with the answers and bring us out of debt and into honour once again.

Promise 54 from Deuteronomy: 15:4-5

Deut. 15:4-5 - "' However there will be no poor among you, since the Lord will surely bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, if only you listen obediently to the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all this commandment which I am commanding you today.'"

Oh, there are so many blessings we are missing out on as a society just because of either a lack of obedience to God or a lack of listening for God's voice. These two verses come after a command to forgive your debtors after 7 years. Who in this world does that? People hold onto debtors so closely until every penny is paid back, but not just those who owe financially,  what about those who have caused offence? People will hold onto grudges for years and years, for some, way past seven years. Imagine what it would be like if we actually wrote off debt both financially and emotionally, forgiving both? Can you imagine the peace that would bring? Those who borrowed would be able to move forward and prosper, those who lent would have a peaceful mind and each offender and offended can go peacefully on their way. Not only will there not be poor among us materially but there wont be the poor attitudes of unforgiveness and bitterness in our hearts. This is God's promise, He will bless our land and there will be no poor among us, IF we are obedient to forgive others as He has forgiven us.

Promise 53 from Deuteronomy: 14:29

Deut. 14:29 - "'The Levite because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.'"

Is it possible that we might be missing out on a blessing from God when we justify reasons for NOT giving to the poor, or think of the widows and orphans?   I think the answer is "yes". We often times do not give out of fear of not having enough for our own children or think we might be "enabling dependency". However, God is very clear, in many passages of scripture, that we are to give to the poor, take care of the widows, orphans and foreigners in our land. I believe if all followers of Jesus really took this to heart, we would see greater prosperity in our land, in our schools, our health facilities and business', taxes would be lowered, people would be more content and happy in what they do because we would have the assurance of God's promise of blessings.

P.S. I realise that we live in a world where people manipulate the system for their own personal gain, and people who make soaking off of social services a career choice are in-numerous. This is why, we must, before we give, pray for that confirmation from the Lord and find out first if these people do fit that category of widow, orphan and foreigner, those who are in positions who truly can not help themselves. Maybe to help them is to give them a plot of land, a small place to live and a shovel of seeds. Maybe it is to give them a sewing machine and teach them to sow, or pay for a mechanics course and food and shelter in the meantime. There are many ways we can "feed" the poor. We want these people to feel "satisfied" in their own skin, usually that means, that have enough resources to help themselves and others. That means that they are healthy spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially. This is how they can be satisfied and taken care of.

Promise 52 from Deuteronomy: 14:24-26

Deut. 14:24-26 - "'If the distance is so great for you that you are not able to bring the tithe, since the place where the Lord your God chooses to set His name is too far away for you when the Lord your God blesses, then you shall exchange it for money, and bind the money in your hand and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses. You may spend the money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household.'"

When God blesses us with a great harvest, whatever it be, on the farm or in the office or a service job, we are to tithe off of that blessing into the place where God chooses to establish His name. Tithing is not a chore or a terrible obligation that is meant to make us feel guilty if we don't. God blesses us, and then with that blessing says, "Take a portion of that blessing and spend it on whatever you like in the place that I'm investing in." He calls us to go into investment partnership, into a place. Then He says, now, "Spend it on anything you would like, anything you desire, Have a bottle of wine on Me!" Enjoy yourself, rejoice and be glad! It is FUN to partner with God in the areas of His choosing and delight. He promises us the blessing of the tithe an the joy in investing it.

Promise 51 from Deuteronomy: 14:23

Deut. 14:23 - "'You shall eat in the presence of the Lord your God, at the place where He chooses to establish His name, the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the first born of your heard and your flock, so that you may learn to fear the Lord God always.'"

Growing up, as my brothers and I sat around the supper table, our prayer before the meal was always, "God is good, God is great, let us thank you for our food, AMEN!" It is common to give thanks for our food before we eat it, but I've not thought much about the location of where I eat food. There have been many times I've eaten in the car, out on the patio, in front of the computer or TV, or in various restaurants. This verse sheds light on the significance of place where food is eaten, not only are we to eat in His presence, but in the place He chooses to establish His name. The promise I saw in this verse is that He chooses the place to establish His name, it is all about Him. We can't go into a place on our own and then pray Him in there, but it is He who does His work in preparing a place for us. Then, regarding food, I'm challenged then to accept those invites by friends who don't know Him, to enter there homes for a meal and pray that while there He will be established in their home. I figure if they have already extended the invite to their home, then God is already at work to establish His name there., and He desires this so that those who reside in that place or who are at the place I eat, will learn to fear/revere Him.

Promise 50 from Deuteronomy 14:2

Deut. 14:2 - "'For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all peoples who are on the face of the earth.'"

It just never gets old to me when I read "The Lord has chosen you!" Not only has He chosen us, but has chosen us out of all the people's on the earth. He saw something in you and in me that was different from any others. He saw the holiness that resides in us. A lot of people believe that holiness only belongs to God, God was specific through Moses, identifying His people as "holy" people. He put holiness, righteousness, purity in us; that is our make-up as He designed us. Most people can't see that in themselves, nor feel as though it is possible on this side of heaven to be "holy". Kingdom truth is opposite what the world tells us. The enemy tries to strip us of our identity as beloved and holy sons and daughters. his work causes people to think that they don't deserve a label of "holiness" as they engage in unholy activities,. But holiness is the stamp God put on us in who we "are", not in what we "do." The Holy Spirit's work in us, helps us strip away or peel back the unholy acts that we do so that the real holy us may be revealed. We are a holy people for whom God chose as His own.

Promise 49 from Deuteronomy 13:1-3

Deut. 13:1-3 - "'If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

The thought of God "testing me" doesn't  cross my mind very often. I usually think of temptations to make the wrong choice comes from the enemy, man or myself. So does God allow the tempter or does He cause it? It really doesn't matter. God has put so much into those who seek after Him that I believe He delights to see the fruit of His investment. Kind of like a coach who pours himself, his character and knowledge into his players. He sends them on the pitch (field) to watch them shine. I don't believe God purposefully sets us up to fall. He is a loving Heavenly Father who enjoys seeing His children excel. He knows His children will say "no" to those things that are not honouring to Him, He just wants to hear us say  the "NO" so He can smile big over us.

Promise 48 from Deuteronomy 12:5

Deut. 12:5 - "'But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and there you shall come.'"

As I face another home assignment (written May 29, 2013), there are alot of unknowns, such as, where will I speak? Of course His name is known all over the states. However there are many of our churches who know Him only in third person, not intimately as their Papa God who leads and whose voice they can hear giving direction and blessings and comfort. They know Jesus as the One who did something for them, but not the One who they can have a close loving intimate relationship with, as their brother (Jesus' words). They know of the existence of the Holy Spirit, but not intimately as the One who is active in their lives that empowers miracles all around them by the powerful name of Jesus and gifts them with incredible Kingdom gifts which builds the body personally and corporately. As I go I wait to hear God lead me to the places who will accept His name for themselves and who will truely make His name famous in the land. I do accept His promise however that His name, Jesus, will be made famous here in this place as well.

Promise 47 from Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Deut. 11:26-28 - "'See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way, which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known.'"

Moses is summing up what he has been telling His people. "It is simple, follow God, you will be blessed, follow others, you will be cursed." It amazes me how people, who follow their own way, get upset when their plans don't go well, or they think they "deserve" a blessing from God. When other things become the primary focus and motivation instead of God, then it is an automatic set up for "curse-like" symptoms. To receive a blessing from God or a curse is a personal choice, just as choosing to follow God or not is a personal choice. God is very clear here and always has been through scripture. Those who keep their eyes on Him and follow Him by staying in close relationship with Him, will be blessed by Him. It is that simple. I am not saying that faithful people will not have trials, I am just saying, "Why take the risk?" when you know that you can't go wrong with God in your sights. A blessing or a curse? Which one will you choose?

Monday, July 21, 2014

Promise 46 from Deuteronomy 11:24-25

Deut. 11:24-25 - "'Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours; your border will be from the wilderness to Lebanon and from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as the western sea. No man will be able to stand before you; the Lord your God will lay the dread of you and the fear of you on all the land on which you set foot, as He has spoken to you.'"

God makes a promise, through Moses that where ever the Israelites set foot, that is where He will bless them. But He also defines the borders. When God sends us to a place or puts us in a position, we can claim it as ours. God will be our defender and provider. However, if we step out of the boundaries of where God places us, there are no guarantees of blessing. God loves it when we align ourselves with Him, with His plan and His blessings for us. When we step out on our own without seeking Him, when we "change" the plans out of selfish desire or out of fear of the enemy, there is no guarantee the blessings will follow us. This is not a fear warning but a confirmation of His blessings when we keep our eyes on Him and accept all He has for us.

Promise 45 from Deuteronomy 11:22-23

Deut. 11:22-23 - "'For if you are careful to keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and hold fast to Him, then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.'"

There is power in community. Moses is speaking to the people of Israel as a community; If that community is united as one, having the same mind and heart in loving God and serving Him out of that love, then God will drive out the communities who don't. If the followers of Jesus truly stood united, and with boldness, loved God and walked in all His ways in their homes and business' and sports fields and beaches and... then the land can't help but be transformed. The others who don't love God wouldn't be able to stand against it and will either move, or join in. God will bless the communities of faith who love Him.

Promise 44 from Deuteronomy 11:16-17

Deut. 11:16-17 - "'Beware that your hearts are not deceived and that you do not turn away and serve other gods and worship them. Or the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and He will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its fruit; and you will perish quickly from the good land which the Lord is giving you.'"

It is terrible how quick people are to blame God when things don't go their way. God pours out His abundance with just one stipulation, to love Him with all our hearts and out of that love, to serve Him in the same way. It is our choice, we love Him, or we don't. Then He makes the choice, to keep the heavens open, or to shut them. Yes, God is sovereign but in His sovereignty He gives us the choice of whether we want to receive His blessings. The doors to those blessings are unlocked to those who love Him. They are not available to those who don't. I'm sure many people could put up an argument against this. But Moses didn't mix words, He was very clear and direct. Plus, he told the people to write the words and strap them to their body so they don't forget. It is that simple: Love Him =blessings; don't love Him = no blessings.

Promise 43 from Deuteronomy 11:13-15

Deut. 11:13-15 - "'It shall come about, if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul, that He will give the rain for your land in its season, the early and late rain, that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your oil. He will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.'"

"The grass is always greener on the other side." Is that because on the other side the people love God more and obey His commands? Maybe! When I think about growing up in the church, I don't recall too many sermons on "really loving God." I remember many about the importance of giving our lives to Him, serving Him, being obedient to Him and then all the negative consequences if we don't. We learn about church disciplines such as reading our Bible in a year, going to Bible studies, taking communion and being Baptized, but what about the "love your God with all you heart and soul" part? Our semi-conservative evangelical camp has put the "love your God with all your heart and soul" into the "charismatic" or "Pentecostal" camp. If someone in the first camp expresses their love and passion for Jesus during worship by hollering out the name of Jesus or clapping while singing about praising Him, then you can almost hear the thoughts of those others around the room, "Oh my, she's gone Pentecostal!" If there is only freedom to express my love and passion for my Jesus (as I am commanded, I might add) in the Pentecostal or charismatic camp, then I will gladly pull up stakes and move toward the other camp. We are commanded to love the Lord our God with ALL our heart and soul. Just raising hands and whooping out the name of Jesus during worship doesn't even cut it. Expressing our love for God needs to be within our life-style, in our conversations, how we respond to situations at work, when the kids spill a glas of milk, when we are cut off or flipped off by someone. When we express our love for God in everyday life, then the raising of hands and whooping out "JESUS!" during worship will just automatically flow out and it doesn't matter where you are, if you are sitting in a monastery or in your conservative camp, it will just flow out from deep within and no one can stop it. Then, the blessings of contentment and satisfaction will flow out of His delight!

Promise 42 from Deuteronomy 11:11-12

Deut. 11:11-12 - "'But the land into which you are about to cross to posses it, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning even to the end of the year.'"

I just love my  yard in the spring. Without doing a thing all year round, when spring comes the yard goes into full bloom, rose trees, ferns, cherry, plum and apricot tree blossoms, beautiful varieties of flowers, for which I don't know the names for. Grass comes up between the holes the dogs dug. It is beautiful. I've lived in this home in Kos*vo for two years (this was written May 2013, moved out of this house three months ago). I don't have a green thumb, but just love the plants that have existed here for years. If I love this small piece of land, I can imagine how my Heavenly Father loves it so much more. He put His care into it so that I and the owners of the house can enjoy it. When I think of the pioneers who came both to this land and to America, they were people who sought after God. God brought them to a place, rich with land which drinks from the rain of heaven. They are both plush with vegetation and green. I can't help but think that God cares for these lands, and His eyes are on them. For the Se*bians and the devout Alb*nians who pioneered the land of Kos*vo, God brought them to this land in order to reveal His care for them down the generations. Even though there has been a decline in dependency on God, which have effected both nations, I still believe that God is the caretaker of His land and will one day, as He poured His glory into the beauty of the soil, He will do the same into the people who have possessed the soil.

Promise 41 from Deuteronomy 11:7

Deut. 11:7 - "'But your own eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord which He did.'"

This isn't as much a promise, but a remembrance call. Moses is once again telling the Israelites that they should love the Lord their God, keep His charge, His statues, His ordinances and commands. Why? Because they know what He is like and what He is capable of. They saw His discipline, greatness, mighty hand, outstretched arm, His signs, and works in Egypt. They saw Him destroy the army by raising the sea waters over them and they saw all He did in the wilderness. They also saw the earth open up and swallow all that belonged to Eliab's sons. The good and the bad are all referred to as the "great" work of the Lord. What an amazing journey that must've been to physically "see" God's hand move with such power and in so many ways, the good an the difficult. If we were truly honest with ourselves, if we really sat down and thought over our lives, I know we would be able to give accounts too, where we "saw" the mighty works of God in our lives. Moses is recalling the testimony of the past so that they know what they can expect of God in the future. If you have seen Him, then you know you will see Him again. If He has done mighty and amazing things in your life in the past, then He can do it again in your future. When you remember those events, then you will also find your promise; you will see His mighty works again!

Promise 40 from Deuteronomy 10:21

Deut. 10:21 - "'He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.'"

I've not really thought about God as being my "praise" before. I've seen Him as the One I praise but not considered Him as my praise. However, when I think about all I've done and all I am, none of that has come to being because of what I've done or made myself to be. He not only gets the praise, but He IS my praise. He is the object of who I am and all I do, He is the essence of my being; Christ in me. He is my praise!

Promise 39 from Deuteronomy 10:18

Deut. 10:18 - "He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing."

There is much injustice in loosing a spouse to death, especially prematurely, or a child, his parents and visa versa. It is just wrong in the order of life. It seems unfair and the mourner (s) is/are left with no one to blame, no one to express their anger to; or their pain. There is such a feeling of powerlessness to reverse the situation or to protect it from happening. A hole of emptiness just pierces the heart and it keeps growing. It seems like such a hopeless situation. However, there is good news on the horizon; God, in His greatness and His great love takes care of the injustice.

I have a client (18 yrs old) now (written in May 2013) who was hit by a car while she was walking home from school. She was left with deformed feet, inability to speak, right-side paralysis and major rehab in front of her. The young man who hit her was fined only 300 euros, because his father had connections in the judicial dept. The father had to stop working so that he could take care of his daughter, plus their younger daughter who has developmental disabilities and his teenage son. His wife was slipping into a depression quickly. They lost all they had, had to sell their home and move into a small house and no one at a government level would go to bat for them. The doctor's told them they needed to go out of country for treatment, a foreign doctor told them that Kosovo has all they need as far as rehab resources, and the rehab place said that she is too advanced in her disability for them to accept. This is injustice! This is that feeling of powerlessness, this is heart-breaking for the family. What can man do? Nothing! But God, in His greatness and compassion will bring justice. He will provide for this girl, this family, He will, in some way deal with the young man, his father and the crooked judge. He will bring joy back into the hearts of that family once again. There is justice, because He is the just One.
