Deut. 1:17 - "'You shall not show partiality in judgement; you shall hear the small and great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgement is God's. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.'"
Moses is speaking to the heads of the tribes. He is giving them instruction on how to be the judge during disputable cases. After he tells them that they should treat all men as equal, he continues to encourage them to "not fear man because the judgement is God's." There is a lot of freedom in this statement, however most of us don't utilise the freedom God is offering us. We still choose to fear man. We fear what other people think, how they will react, how they will treat us. So, we strive to not make waves, to keep others comfortable around us. Jesus certainly didn't bother Himself with how others felt when He spoke out the truths of the Kingdom. If He is the perfect model for us, why don't we follow His lead? I must admit, for me, this is my greatest challenge and also the greatest hindrance to seeing the full power of God working in me and around me. The promise here is that we don't NEED to fear, because we are fearing things that are not our responsibility to take on. They belong to the Lord!
